List: Fantastic Audiobooks, Volume 1

Book List Covers - Stripes

Audiobooks can be the ugly-step-sister of the book world. Some people are purists about their literature and only consider reading the words of a book as acceptable. I say, okay whatever, to them. If you want to turn your nose up to audiobooks, that’s fine I guess, but I think audiobooks are a great addition to the literary world. I like to listen to them on my decently long drive to and from work–they keep me happy while I sit in traffic. I like to pop on my headphones when I am doing chores around the house to help make the process a little more enjoyable. I like walking my dog around the neighborhood whilst getting swept away in a story. I love that audiobooks allow me to experience books when I don’t have the time to sit down and read a book. I tend to listen to books that I really want to read, but not enough to pick up the physical book. Sometimes they are books I fear I will have a hard time getting through, so listening to someone read the story to me with the vocal elements and voice inflections helps make it easier to get through. I also like to listen to light reads via audiobook; given how often I am doing something I don’t love (cleaning or driving in traffic), listening to a fun book helps make those moments better. I also like to do re-reads via audiobook. I love snuggling up reading a great book, but I also love listening to a killer audiobook when the story and the narration comes together for an impactful performance. Here are 6 books that I think accomplish all that I love about audiobooks in a fantastic way:

BossypantsTitle: Bossypants

Author: Tina Fey

Narrator: Tina Fey

Guys. This is the audiobook of all audiobooks. Hearing Tina Fey tell her own story is the only way to do this book. Her story telling is so funny and she really doesn’t sugarcoat or glamorize her life. I listened to this on a cross-state drive by myself and it made the time fly by. I laughed so hard!

Yes PleaseTitle: Yes Please

Author: Amy Poehler

Narrator: Amy Poehler

Soooo I think most of what I said for Bossypants applies here. I didn’t know much about Amy Poehler before listening to this or even really watch anything she was in, but I had such success with Tina Fey’s book as an audiobook, I gave this one a go. It was great! Amy was really vulnerable, but still really funny. I liked how she was honest about the ups and downs of motherhood.

UnbrokenTitle: Unbroken

Author: Laura Hillenbrand

Narrator: Edward Herrmann

This audiobook was so so so good. I would sit in the car in my driveway to continue listening to this incredible true story. Louis Zamperini’s harrowing story during WWII is unforgettable and Edward Hermann is an amazing narrator. If you aren’t familiar with him, he plays Richard Gilmore in Gilmore Girls. Really, really fantastic audiobook.

One for the moneyTitle: Stephanie Plum Series

Author: Janet Evanovich

Narrator: C.J. Critt

This is one of my guilty pleasure series and I read like the first 15 books via physical and then discovered audiobooks. These are quick, 5 hour listens that are always enjoyable for me. I like the narrator and really like the voices she gives to each of the characters.

E & PTitle: Eleanor & Park

Author: Rainbow Rowell

Narrator: Rebecca Lowman, Sunil Malhotra

Rainbow Rowell is one of my very favorite authors and it all started with this audiobook. This story is so sweet, but also heart wrenching. It captures how hard adolescence can be and the angst of teenage love. Ugh, such a wonderful story. The story is made even better though by these great narrators. They both did such a great job illustrating the angst in their voices. It was perfectly done! Oh I feel like I might need a re-listen.

annaTitle: Anna and the French Kiss

Author: Stephanie Perkins

Narrator: Kim Mai Guest

This is a delicious cotton candy read. Hearing this tension-filled ya romance unfold through the crystal clear narration of Kim Mai Guest is delightful. I am obsessed with her voice and loved all of the vocal elements she added to the story to really emphasize Anna’s personality. I have been hoping to find another book narrated by her that I am interested in reading. Still holding out hope for something to come up.
